Oh, and with the free downloads.. I did have some scruples.  Small/struggling/indie musicians I liked I made sure I bought their music... even if it duped stuff I had already downloaded.

ohhhh.. once you go ipod, you never go back.  Maybe other players, too- i only have an ipod.  I carry weeks and weeks and weeks of my music around.  Every one of my CDs, at my fingertips.  It's life-changing.

And, I go both ways (hehe) on buying music.  Of course you own it when you purchase it online.  That said, I'm more comfortable buying the CDs that I want, ripping them once then storing them away.  Old fashioned?  It's a automatic backup system.  But- if i just want a song or two, I'll use iTunes and buy it.  The free podcasts are great (shout-out to kexp.org).

Dealing with illegal downloading:  I just turned 30; and for a few years i downloaded gobs and gobs of free stuff... you know, when everyone was doing it.  Burned lots of mix CDs.  Now I don't... but mostly b/c I don't have the energy/desire to make sure what I'm doing/getting is safe.  And I'm a computer geek, so that knowledge scares me and I *loathe* fixing a F-ed up computer.

If we're talking software, then I AM TOTALLY writing on a purchased
version of Word.  My copy just doesn't have the little hologram, it
must have fallen off.  I still buy CD's but stuff that I download,
well let's just say it's for preview purposes as well.
