1) A sperm (and an egg too) are 1 CELL! Not a collection of cells. You've heard of sperm cell, egg cell? That's CELL, singular.
2) For that matter a tomato is alive before it is picked, as is every other plant that we eat, which is everything that we eat except animals. The only things any animal eats were once alive. If we didn't eat things that used to be alive there would be no life. We don't eat rocks, people! Yes we eat minerals, but we aren't going to have an entire diet of zinc and iron. The "alive" arguement doesn't work for me. Yogurt has live cultures, which I believe you eat while they are still alive. Kinda freaked me out at first too.
