Don't know exactly. As I said, never been to a wedding with a groom's cake. But it's during the reception when people are dancing and milling about. Have to assume it's distributed about the same time as the main cake.
In Steel Magnolias they thought it so hideous they hid it in the car port. Memorably, Shirley MacLaine cuts off the tail/bottom and gives it to the father of the bride (with whom she has been feuding) and he thanks her graciously, saying there's "nothing like a good piece of ass". Chick flick, and still one of my favorites right up through the wedding reception, after which I liked it less and less.
