I had a letter to the editor printed in the Washington Post last year. Basically I got the email below and I emailed back my information. No phone call nothing. I could have faked the whole thing.
We are in receipt of your letter to the editor and are considering it for
publication.
We need to verify that you wrote the letter and did not acquire any
portion of it from other sources. [Other than properly attributed
quotes.]
We need to know that you are using your real name.
Did you send or post this letter or a similar letter to any other media
or internet forum [including a blog]?
We need to know what town you reside in?
Please respond to this email with the verifications.
Please provide us, if you haven't already, a day and evening phone number
that we can contact you for any questions we may have.
We will need to edit the letter for style and/or space considerations.
The initial edited version is below, further minor editing may be needed as
we approach deadline.
Thank you for the submission,
John

On the other hand, don't newspapers/magazines make an attempt to contact letter writers if they're going to print a submission? Granted, the verification might just be "Is your name DA Arthur and did you write us a letter?" Which would be very easy to fake, if that was your goal.
