When I went to school, every once in a while (maybe at the beginning of the
term) we had to stand up one by one and give our full names. All middle
names, however tame ("Jean" - bwahahaha") were a source of merriment, and
anything odd (like a surname-type name - middle names in our minds were
supposed to be unused Christian [you should pardon the expression] names)
was particularly amusing.
For my daughters, they got middle names that went with their first names, in
a South'n kind of way (tho we're very northern, so northern we're not even
in the States) - Laura Lee and Jennifer May.
However, it's a whole new world out there, full of names my grade three
class would still be laughing about...
A friend of mine has a new granddaughter, but can't tell me what the name is
because she hasn't got the pronunciation down yet.... (All parties concerned
are of English stock - it's not a furrin name, it's a made-up name.) (And,
hey, why not - people have been "John" and "Mary" for thousands of years -
why not give those monikers a rest. All names had to be made up sometime.
I rather admire the custom among some Afro (after Michael Richards)
Americans to name their kids something original....tho I disapprove of
misused aprostrophes. So there. )
For Maureen - eek. But I've lived thru some Christmases like that, even
with no exotic input. (See "English stock" above.)(Or maybe "drunken
Celtic".) Thank goodness that, aside from maybe some turkey [pre-prepared],
me and mine ignore Christmas these days. (Big blow-out for Yule, though!)
(Oops, come to think of it - the one in prison went fine [having armed
guards down the hall helps], but one of my covenors - I missed all this, cuz
I had to be home - at our coven Yule had a melt-down......kinda made me
nostalgic for those family Christmas get-togethers....a good flame-out on
the darkest day...)
