I have a book of humorous essays that I was browsing through and I came upon an essay by Will Durst about the similarities between Halloween and Election Day, besides the fact that they are about a week apart. I thought you might find this amusing. Here are some highlights:
Ill-fitting hair and makeup applied with trowels fiendish door-to-door solicitation eerie temporary abandonment of common sense nascent fear that Sam Donaldson may be lurking behind the next tree remorse and bad taste in your mouth upon waking the next morning the people who are best at pretending to be somebody else obtain the mostest bestest goodies The really hard work goes on where darkness and secrecy reign the scariest folks don't even know they're wearing costumes if you don't come through with the right favors, you run the risk of getting t.p.'d greed is not only encouraged, but rewarded Ronald Regan and Richard Nixon are perennial favorites well-meaning warnings not to get involved are continually made and go continually unheeded >From 101 Damnations, Edited by Michael J. Rosen, (c) 2002. The book is apparently out of print, but some libraries including my local one carry it. I got it in the bargain/remainder section, originally $18, on sale for $4. The majority of my books come from the bargain/remainder section, so I have plenty of $30 books for $2, $3, $4. You can get them on amazon too, in the bargain books section. I've gotten lots of books there that I wouldn't have otherwise known existed, which is cool.
