There is a tobacco-free nurses initiative with a link from the website of the hospital I work for, and I came across this statistic:
"Despite progress in reducing the prevalence of tobacco use, in 2000 there were still 46.5 million adults in the United States who were smokers, 26 percent male and 21 percent female," Sarna said. "Smoking continues to be a major cause of preventable illness, disability and premature death in this country." Um, what are the other 53%? Some other gender? Did they mean 26% of males and 21% of females are smokers? The way this is written it looks like 26% of the 46.5 million are male and 21% are female. If they had said 24% of Americans smoke, 21% of females and 26% of males, that would have made sense. But written this way, no.
