Competitors have gathered in Brighton for the Human Powered Vehicle World Championships. The event has attracted more than 100 cyclists using homemade Wacky Races-style inventions. Entrants hope their machines will reach speeds of more than 50mph. The contest culminates in a two-hour endurance race on Sunday to decide the champion. Spectators can also take part in a series of 200-metre sprints. Dutch competitors Jan Poots and Allert Jacobs have designed a push-me-pull-you tandem with back-to-back seats. Most competitors have opted for cocoon-style bikes with a hard shell cockpit to limit wind resistance, reports The Times. West Palm Beach, Florida - A botched bank robbery turned into a free-for-all on a downtown street when thousands of dollars in cash went flying. About a dozen people scooped up the money, which was thrown into the street Tuesday by two men who had just robbed a bank, police said. Witnesses said those grabbing fistfuls of bills, some of them stained red from a hidden explosive dye-pack, included people driving BMWs and a Rolls Royce -and a mother who left her baby in a stroller on the sidewalk to run into the street. "People risked their lives running into traffic to scoop up the cash," said Donna Bashar, manager of an apartment tower across the street. "The cash turned the entire street into chaos." The armed men robbed the bank of an undisclosed amount, then fled in a truck, which they abandoned several blocks away, police said. Police believe they dumped some of the money because it was dye- stained. Police said they recovered more than $1,000 from people who gathered cash off the street and gave it to officers when they arrived at the scene. An Alabama woman who fell asleep on a mattress in a bin outside a shop woke up in a landfill site in Georgia. A worker at the tip in Lagrange saw 29- year-old Theresa Moorer's leg poking out of a pile of furniture that was due to be crushed by a compactor. She refused medical treatment and told police she can't remember why she crawled in the bin. A supervisor at the site says Ms Moorer would have been buried under a mountain of rubbish and a thick cover of earth if she hadn't been spotted. I asked him, 'Are you thinking what I'm thinking?' I'm still waiting for his answer, but the doctors aren't allowing me any visitors just yet." - Brad Osberg ------------------------------------------------------------ AD Swap -Please have a look at this fine E-zine ------------------------------------------------------------ PREGNANT?
