A Canadian woman has collected 39,000 grasshoppers
to win tickets to see an Elton John gig. Brandy Elliott won
a grasshopper-catching contest run by local radio station
Z-99 for the sought-after tickets. She spent all weekend
catching the insects in Saskatchewan, but only beat her
closest competitor by 6,000 grasshoppers. She started
by hand, armed with just a bucket, but soon realised it
wasn't enough. She then set up traps with nets on the
back of a moving truck. After the official count, the grasshoppers
were deposited in a bin behind the radio station.
Hundreds of motorists have been booked in an
Edinburgh street for parking on double yellow lines
that do not exist. Enforcers in the city say the council
has ordered them to issue tickets despite the lack
of a warning that it is a restricted parking zone. The
council says the problem is caused by fading yellow
lines on the street due to wear and tear. Tickets for
�30 have been issued here for eight months.
A Pennsylvania man allegedly tried to kill a friend who
crept up behind him at a concert and yanked up his
underwear. Daniel Strouss is said to have held a
grudge for months after being given a so-called
"wedgie" at the Phish concert. The 19-year-old is
accused of shooting Eric Kassoway in the arm and
leg. Mr Kassoway, also 19, nearly died from loss of
blood. Strouss is to stand trial accused of carrying out
the shooting with a 9mm gun.
A Northumberland bishop has been banned from
boarding a plane with his traditional crook after
security staff deemed it an offensive weapon. The
Right Reverend Christopher Rogerson was on his
way from Newcastle to Brussels for a religious
festival and wanted to take the crosier as hand luggage.
Airline staff at British European say the four-piece
crook is classed as a possible security risk under
new checks brought in since September 11.
