To answer your question I think whiteboard would be great. I came across this the other day ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/pub/qt/source/qtcanvas-opensource-4.1.0.tar.gz (I was told final version will be in 4.2) it could make it easier though it would not be toolkit independent.
