Follow-up Comment #4, bug #9309 (project wesnoth):
To answer your question:
- No, I haven't actually noticed that the button is grayed out. I don't have
a bad eyesight, my monitor's gamma may be slightly off, but the effect isn't
very pronounced.
(It doesn't especially need to pop in and out of existence, if the grayed-out
effect is more visible. The button's presence in the menu doesn't really
bother me. But if it did pop in and out of existence, that would be OK too,
and the user experience wouldn't IMO suffer. It's your choice if you want to
keep this consistent with bug #9121 or not.)
--
We seem to disagree on the preferred uses of ENTER and ESC in dialogs.*
- For me, ENTER descends further into the menus / dialogs, _selecting the
focused item_, i.e. _confirming_ the selection. As I said, I consider this
the _consistent_ choice, based on my use experience of basically _any_
software, from word processors to games.
- I use ESC as a standard way to get out of dialogs. (For me, it's not too
far off, even if it's at the corner of the keyboard.) Again, this is what I
perceive as the _standard_ key for this type of activity.
*) Your explanation of the dialog being of the CLOSE_ONLY model seems to be
based on the technical (code) implementation more than user experience. No
offence intended by this statement - I understand that the game is created by
the developers for the developers, and value this approach and the work you
developers have put to this game. It has produced a quality game so far.
>From a user experience point of view, however, the dialog doesn't really
_look_ like a CLOSE_ONLY dialog. It looks like a dialog that has the option
to go further into the details pane. (This usage is, as you state, also a
change from the previous behaviour.)
--
I will not touch the forums with this issue. What I'd _like_ you to do,
(though it's not for me to say what you'll actually do,) is ask around a bit
among the developers, ask them to take a look at this report and the dialog,
to see what _they_ would expect the ENTER key to do in that dialog.
--
I generally prefer keyboard shortcuts, and don't much like using the mouse
for trivial tasks. In short, the current options 1) and 2) aren't all too
ideal IMO, and a keyboard shortcut would be appreciated. (As is obvious, I'd
prefer ENTER, but if the other devs' opinions coincide with yours in this
issue, then at least 'd', if the coincidence with the other use of the 'd'
hotkey isn't a problem.)
