Okay, it works for me as well and I also have WinXP. What's more official
builds are made with devcpp as well. What I suspect is either corrupt
zlib.dll or some dodgy dependency you're using to compile. Can you list the
following things?
-libraries versions you're using (SDL, zlib, boost)
-zlib.dll size
Also try to obtain a backtrace via gdb and repeat the crashes with
--log-debug=all
