Ahh, thanks! That's much better than what I did.
unit.name now gives the description from WML if it exists, otherwise the
typename, numeric id and unit name :).
e.g. leader unit from 1st scenario in "Flight to Freedom":
unit.name --> "Malakar"
generic unit:
unit.name --> "Drake Glider-1053859161-Maraag"
