Update of bug #12264 (project wesnoth):
Status: Confirmed => Upstream Problem
_______________________________________________________
Follow-up Comment #4:
SDL is Simple Drawing Library. It's a service library with ported versions
for Linux, Windows and Mac that provides a common set of calls for graphics,
sound, and other capabilities interesting to game designers. Wesnoth uses
it; so do lots of other games. It's how we can support Windows even though
we develop mainly under Linux.
What I mean by "trunk" is the current development sources in our
version-control system; "trunk" is a term of art, opposed to "branch", that
basically means "the main line of development. If you didn't already know
this, the chance that you have the technical knowledge to "build from trunk"
as I requested is zero. So never mind about that.
What I'm telling you is that, almost certainly, the flaw is in SDL itself
rather than Wesnoth. I believe this because (a) it has been independently
reported from two different Windows machines but doesn't reproduce on a Linux
box, (b) there is basically no Windows-specific display code in Wesnoth --
nowhere for us to actually *have* a bug outside SDL that wouldn't also show
under Linux, and (c) code to tweak display parameters like the gamma is
notoriously, I mean *notoriously* prone to obscure operating-system-dependent
bugs!
The bug being in SDL code means, practically speaking, that we can't fix it.
None of us are really expert at SDL internals; actually, the whole point of
SDL is to hide those details so we don't need to be experts. I was asking
you to report the bug "upstream", that is to the SDL developers.
If you don't know how to do that, and can't figure it out with a web search
or two, you're out of options. All you (or we) can do, really, is wait for
the next version of SDL to ship, build Wesnoth with that, and hope they have
fixed the problem.
Really, I apologize for this. It's as frustrating for us to have a problem
with the game that we can't fix as it is for you. Maybe if you make polite
but emphatic noises at the SDL guys (the way you did to us) it will be fixed
sooner.
