Follow-up Comment #3, bug #10130 (project wesnoth):

No, this isn't a bug. It was just a request to do something a little
different. But, it was done for the 1.5.2 release. The changelog notes it as
"When examining stored units, now the attacks, max_hitpoints, max_moves, and
max_experience are the "real" values and can also be modified."
