this looks good, I'm not happy with the override_in_hex part, I already have
mechanism to do that (will look at the details later) but overall, this
sounds good
I'll commit that ASAP both for trunk and 1.6 (source part) then assign the
patch to zookeeper to do the WML part of the patch
