Details:
I suspect this is the same as bug#13369 <https://gna.org/bugs/?13369>, with
the fix for that bug failing to address the underlying problem due to an
unclear bug report most likely.
As best I can determine, any unit type that exists either on the map or in
the recall list when a scenario begins (either through starting a new game or
loading a saved game), will not be linked to by the help page of any unit it
can advance into. Aside from the rare cases that those units can advance from
multiple units, the advancement will simply not have an "Advances From:"
(hereafter AF) line in its help description. If it does have multiple
parents, only the others will be listed.
To reproduce: Start any new campaign. AToTB is a good one, since it gives you
a decent selection of unit types of multiple levels to start out. Open the
description of any unit on the field, click a link in the Advances To: line
to go to the help page for one of its advancements. There will not be an AF
line linking back to the unit you originally opened the description of.
Also works in multiplayer: There will not be any AF links to the unit type of
your leader from appropriate units.
Applies to units in the recall list: Open any campaign save, access help for
any unit in your recall list but not present on the field, click an
advancement link. There won't be an AF link going back.
Only occurs for units present when the scenario starts: Start a new HttT
campaign. All AF links except from Commander to Fighter (Konrad's unit type)
work correctly, as the Orcs and Delfador are max level anyway. Recruit an
Elvish Fighter. the AF links from the Elvish Marshal and Elvish Hero pages
still work.
At the title screen when the game is first opened, all AF links work
correctly. After quitting to the title screen from any game, the AF links
that were broken by that game remain broken.
When starting a new game, any links broken by a previous game are repaired.
E.g. Starting AToTB breaks Horsemen, Knight, etc.; subsequently starting a
new HttT game repairs all those broken links and breaks only Fighter for
Konrad.
