Details:
Bug 12926 refers to a very similar issue and a known SDL bug.
The behaviour I see now is that you can change the buffer fine from the main
Wesnoth screen, but if you try to change the sound buffer size during a
scenario Wesnoth instantly quits and dies. You may sometimes be able to
change it once before it crashes. (Downwards is more likely to work than
upwards.) It then dies on the second alteration, even if you don't leave the
sound preferences window between changes.
Also, try this: Set the buffer size to 4096 in the main menu. Save settings,
start a scenario. Set the buffer size from 4096 to 2048 inside the scenario.
Save settings, close preferences window. Then reopen the advanced sound
preferences, and note that the highest setting, previously 4096, is now 2048.
Any further change at this point produces an instant quit and die of the game.
