Follow-up Comment #2, bug #18996 (project wesnoth):
@anonymissimus you're example uses Lua while the original example uses WML,
which uses a different random generator.
@Simon, The random number is generated by a random generator, whose maximum
value probably is 32767 for you. So I would expect numbers in the range 100000
-- 1032767. I'll ask the Mac packager to verify this hypothesis.
