The reason why it was hard to reproduce was that it depended on what savegames
were loaded previously.  The error/crash only occurs when a start-of-scenario
save had been loaded to start the scenario.  It does not happen when one plays
into the scenario from the previous scenario or starts it from the Turn 1
save.  The technical reasons for this are summarized in the commit message.

The bug will be fixed in Wesnoth 1.11.7.  It can be prevented from happening
in previous 1.11 versions by *not* loading the start-of-scenario save.  Start
with the Turn-1 save (which must have been created by getting there from the
previous scenario, of course, not from the start-of-scenario save) or, if you
need to see the story or start messages again, reload the last turn of the
previous scenario and play into the scenario again.
