Follow-up Comment #1:
The problem was that the buttons were throwing a weird exception type that
doesn't seem to be caught anywhere and would essentially result in
termination.
I experimented with trying to just skip buttons that we don't have images for,
but that doesn't work, it's pretty much baked into all the gui stuff that the
buttons have to exist. So this error needs to be fatal. I changed to code to
throw the usual "fatal error" exception, now it will still stop the game, but
will give you an error dialog and take you to the title screen.
