Peaking at >700MB on a single-terrain 200x200 map like that sounds weird,
since I only see <300MB in that case (even after scrolling around everywhere).
You sure that wasn't affected by other maps you had open(ed)?

Anyway, the biggest problem is the transitions. I'll do some optimization
there and see how much that helps. In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt to hear
what your performance and memory use are like if you disable all the water
transitions by removing these lines:

For what it's worth, I'm still on SDL1.
