Follow-up Comment #8, bug #25013 (project wesnoth):
The morning star is a mace weapon, I don't know of the history of it being a
compound word in medieval history. Compounding words for many (although not
all) words is a relatively modern thing, especially in American dialects of
English, but I would take whatever was dominant in the contemporary weapons of
the day.
If anything, you've already said that morning star seems to be used more in
Wesnoth.
