What about having a hotkey that toggles all the stuff covering the graphics? Then if you just wanna look at the pretty graphics for a while, you can, and then easily go back when you want to actually think about playing.

Me too.

I tried to give it a chance, but what really messes things up is a unit
with a bar which heals and loses its bar.  The bar is visually ugly,
perhaps, but serves a useful mnemonic function.

If someone wants to redo the code for bars, perhaps the HP bar could be
made thinner -- that would go some way toward making it less visually
intrusive.
