The simplest thing would seem to be to move the bar over to the left, as i've done in the attached for Konrad and old Defador. That would get it out of the way for most units. Is there some technical reason it must be entirely within the unit's hex?

Me too.

I tried to give it a chance, but what really messes things up is a unit
with a bar which heals and loses its bar.  The bar is visually ugly,
perhaps, but serves a useful mnemonic function.

If someone wants to redo the code for bars, perhaps the HP bar could be made thinner -- that would go some way toward making it less visually
intrusive.
