Not really an aside, but sort of an unexpected comment, of sorts:
I think we need more human kingdoms, and human kingdoms very much like the kingdom of wesnoth (e.g. sharing use of most, if not all, loyalist units), near Wesnoth. There's one line in the prologue that seems to disappear in a puff of smoke: "The kingdom of wesnoth was plunged into a bitter war with the peoples of the north." What peoples of the north? What the heck happened to these?
Well, I say we make some up. One of the chief reasons for this is that, because of the possibilities of disputes between these kingdoms, this makes for a great deal of wonderful campaign fodder. I imagine many of these as city-states; as kingdoms in the sense that germany had before it was united - perhaps not kingdoms, but regions ruled by the local baron, or duke, or count. Some of these would have sworn fealty to the crown of wesnoth, some would have no allegiances, and some would have sworn to other rulers.
Also, it could make for a much more interesting, and much more plausible end to HttT - one in which Delfador and Konrad convince several kings from the north - all being diplomatically played off against each other by Asheviere, to ally together and help overthrow her. It would fit very well with the recovery of the sceptre of fire, as well - the sceptre (and the princess) could be a key element in convincing these kings of the legitimacy of Konrad's argument (His argument being that Asheviere is only biding her time; currently occupied with swallowing up the kingdoms to the south, before she turns on them and takes their lands, one by one).
