I think it wasn't on purpose it's something that we missed.
I don't really see the benefit of not doing it and to me it doesn't look like a
big issue.
However we shouldn't do the fix in 1.4 since it will result in OoS error in
networked games.

Err this feature is already there. We can already alter status with [effect]s.
You would use things like this :
[effect]
   apply_to=status
   remove=poisoned
[/effect]
