There's been some level of profiling, and optimizations of different factors to varying degrees. Historically, performance has not been a top priority -- rather readable and simple code has been. Also when performance has been looked at, CPU is optimized at the expense of memory. Relatively recently we've started looking at memory usage as we've wanted to get Wesnoth working on embedded devices.
