I don't think putting in support for fribidi 2 would be very difficult.
I'd be willing to try to do that, but I don't know how to test that it
actually works (only that it compiles successfully and doesn't break
English text).
Is this something I should try anyway?
Is there someone who has access to a machine with fribidi 2 that could
actually test this?

The main difference is that the conversion function now allows for conversion
between several character sets and unicode rather than utf-8. The name
has changed and a new parameter has been added to indicate which charset
to convert to or from.

The build systems all check for fribidi 1 now (though there is still a
bug in the cmake build that is expected to be fixed shortly), so the
existing checks could be modified to define a value indicating which
version to use in addition to its availability.
