I think since we are running ads on the website, and have other
sources of revenue now, it would be good to have clear and transparent
accountability and reporting about Wesnoth's finances and what we are
using money for.

I have drawn up a simple financial report, showing our sources of
income, and our expenses. All amounts are in United States Dollars:

INCOME

Gifts: 1099.66
Website Ads: August: 200.58
           September: 167.58
Summer of Code: 2500.00 (pending)

TOTAL: 3967.82

PROJECTIONS (Through end of 2008):

Ads: October: 221.78
     November: 220.00
     December: 220.00

TOTAL (including PROJECTIONS): 4629.60

EXPENSES

Server/hosting: August: 214.95
              September: 169.95
                October: 169.95

Development laptop (David): 1004.07

TOTAL: 1558.92

PROJECTIONS (Through end of 2008):

Server/hosting: November: 169.95
                 December: 169.95

TOTAL (including PROJECTIONS): 1898.82

EXPECTED BALANCE AT END OF 2008: 4629.60 - 1898.82 = 2730.78

Notes:

- We are expecting to make between $200 and $220 per month from
website ads on an ongoing basis.
- We hope to participate in Google Summer of Code next year, and would
thus earn more mentor's fees.
- I think it is clear that we no longer need to ask our users to
donate money to the project, and can discontinue requesting donations.
- We will continue to pay $169.95 per month in server fees on an
ongoing basis.
- Income will generally be taxable at the end of the year. We are not
registered as a charity, and I have to declare income on my tax
return. Most expenses should be deductible from this. I will consult
with a tax professional for more details.
- We've paid for or subsidized hardware for various developers at
times. My main development laptop died a while ago, and it's been
difficult to develop since. I ordered a new laptop specifically for
developing Wesnoth with. Developers may ask for subsidies on hardware
they intend to use primarily for developing Wesnoth with.
- We may look at optimizing our use of ads to earn more revenue from them.
- If we can save sufficient money, we may one day consider organizing
a Wesnoth Conference, inviting a range of developers and subsidizing
expenses.
