Aggrey, Jimmy, Alaka,

I think this is yet another issue that we can try to help our old man in as a
community. Indeed I remember having read that story  Jimmy has referred to some
3 or 4 years ago. If through this forum we can try to gather the necessary
facts to enable Semei proof that indeed it was his work that is standing as the
Uganda flag todate, we could then try to bring to the attention of the
ministers from the region to pursue it further with government before a legal
reddress is sought.

I would like to belief Muzee Semei did this work in the open and therefore
there should be some people around who actually know about this and can confirm
whether or not Semeis' claim is right. Talking to elders like Avutia Jason,
Muzee Hamis Marijan and others we may think of may be a good idea.

Thank you,
Banduga Ismail

Aggrey,

I am glad you have raised this. I have followed this issue of Simei Nyai with
keen interest. I undertook to have his side of story heard by arranging
interview with him that run in The New Vision about three or four years ago
around such a period of independence day celebrations. It was full page
interview with his picture. At that time he showed The New Vision letters from
RDC of Arua and some correspondednces with presidents office coordinated by
Joram Ajeani who was then MP before he went as Ambassador to Zaire (now DRC).
To my surprise no politician from West Nile picked to address the issue on the
floor of Parliament. Unlike Kakoma who composed the national anthem and took on
the legal path, and go compensated after several years of legal battle. Simei
has no resources to get through the legal process. As I write now though
retired he is a voulunteer teacher in a primary school (I dont recal the name)
between Oluko and Binze in Oluko division, Arua district. Those who are willing
to assist him to follow up can contact ine of his daughters Perry Ndezo Okuonzi
who lives in Kampala on 0772440418.

Dear WestNilers (and particularly Mr. Alaka and the WestNile Legal Experts),

I would like to first of all appreciate the debates that have been raging on,
on this network much as some of the correspondences degenerated into personal
attacks, which for now is an issue already sorted. My humble prayer is that
such a scenario shouldn't be identified with us the West Nilers if we all
behaved responsibly.

A few days ago I was listening to news on Capital Radio and the above subject
regarding Mzee Simei Nyai's claim for having been the designer of the Uganda
National Flag featured as a news item that day. However I note that this has
not been a one-off claim just for this year but an issue that has been running
"quietly and yet loudly" in his heart for the last 10 years or so (if I'm not
mistaken).

Perhaps the reason why Mzee Nyai's voice has not been heard, let alone being
recognized by the relevant authorities for this great contribution he claims
could be the lack of a copyright for his artwork of the Uganda Flag at the time
he submitted the drawing.

Fellow WestNilers:
1.  Is there a way in which the artwork for the Uganda Flag can be traced back
to Mzee Simei Nyai.

2.  If the above is possible can we legally (and by other means available)
advocate for what is due to him or

3.  Can we ensure that he gets the due recognition for having made this noble
contribution?

WestNilers (particularly Caleb and the legal fraternity), your humble
suggestions for practical steps to be taken on the above matter will be highly
appreciated.

FYI, Mzee Simei Nyai lives (if I can vaguely remember) in Edroze, near Okuambo
Cuu in the eastern part of Greater Mvara.

Best regards to all,

Aggrey Adrale
