Dear Betty,
Sorry I could not reply your message immediately, I had gone for meetings
and I have just seen your message. Since I dont see anything to celebrate
about on the women's day, I have some time to do my own things.

Cafe discussions are open for everybody and contributions from everybody is
very crucial. So please tell whoever can come for these discussions to do
so. We are all trying to contribute in small ways to the development of our
community and everybody's contribution is very important.
You are right on saying that not many groups are doing such and even those
who do such do it very formally at particular times of their choice and
therefore attendance is difficult by the community. For cafe, we follow
people where they are gathered for their own things like drinking, prayers
and we agree on them for the time.We do not have formal meetings where
people are invited formally. I was in Lira recently for other official
duties and women were demanding for information on cervical cancer and a
Karimojong attended a cafe last week in Entebbe, I cannot express his
excitment and happiness and he wanted to know when science cafe can reach
Karamonja and he gave a very interesting testimony. Such are some of the
indications that community is eager to learn but have no avenue for
information and that is why we have the motivation for these discussions.
80% of the diseases killing people in Uganda are preventable but most
people do not have information on how to do so and this results in over
burdening of our health care systems. We therefore thing that such sharing
can contribute positively to change of lives.

Children are significantly affected by domestic violence, look at the
newspapers of yesterday and today where a child was burnt by the father
during a fight with the wife, and today a father in Arua burnt a girl for
eating bean soup without permission and it is likely that the mother of
this little is not at home. And we still remember late Ssebanga, his soul
rest in peace who was badly tortured by the stepmother and the father wh
eventually died of cancer resulting from such torture. such are so
humiliating and traumatic. Children always attend the Arua cafes and we
shall give time to air their views and it will be good if your colleagues
are around. You can also refer them to the website
www.sciencecafeuganda.orgfor more information. The webiste has been
updated and we are now loading
new information.

You can also link them up with me, I will be there for the discussions and
let me know if they need any other information

Thanks
Christine
