Nebbi residents cane (BEAT) health workers during sensitisation campaign

SUMMARY: The locals, accused of lacking pit-latrines and easing
themselves in the bush, assaulted the VHTs for pointing out their
faults.

Four Nebbi residents have been detained for allegedly caning Village
Health Teams who were on a sensitisation exercise in Jupumbanya
Village.

The suspects, who are accused of lacking pit-latrines, assaulted three VHTs.

VHTs are recruited by the government through the Ministry of Health to
carry out civic education about sanitation and to distribute malaria
drugs.

They, however, face resistance from communities who lack pit-latrines,
garbage pits and other sanitation facilities.

The OC station, Mr Jimton Aguta, said the suspects’ files were
forwarded to the Resident State Attorney with preferred charges of
obstruction of government programme and assaulting government
officials who were on duty.

“Anybody who assaults government officials on duty is liable for seven
years imprisonment because he or she is a saboteur of
