Hi All:
Sorry for the cross posting, but I got this message from Janet Teasdale. I
really hope you are able to engage some how...especially with the selection
process. My own concern is, UBC has the tendency to gravitate toward colonial
links which means only certain students from certain parts of Africa may be
selected. So, I hope the scholarship selection committee will invite African
scholars and students to participate.

Cheers,VeronicaDear Colleagues,I am thrilled to share the exciting news that
the University of British Columbia has received a grant of $25 million from the
MasterCard Foundation to join the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, a
network of 15 institutions around the world. As the press release below notes,
UBC is among the first Canadian universities to join the program, which will
offer talented African students from economically disadvantaged communities the
opportunity to study abroad, with the ultimate goal of leading change in their
communities when they return home.

To share further information on this program, we will be hosting a gathering
with our student leaders who are part of the Africa Awareness Initiative during
the week of May 12th, during which we will also provide an opportunity for Q&A.
A key component of this program will be the mentoring and engagement of the new
African students in the UBC community. Through the strong ties you have with
Africa and academic linkages, we wanted to invite you to celebrate this
opportunity for African scholars and to become involved when the first five
students arrive this fall. If you are interested in attending, please contact
Jessica Lingham in the VP, Students office at 604-822-3644 or
[email protected] April 26th.  We will then confirm the date and timing
of the event by the week of May 3rd.

Please feel welcome to share this invitation with others who may be interested
and we look forward to sharing more information with you about this exciting
program in May.

Kind regards,Janet
