In 1986, a new government was formed in Kampala under the leadership of
Yoweri Museveni as president. The above information is, of course, public
knowledge, but I bring it up in relation to the political situation in
Tanzania. I tend to believe that the NRM is a mass national political
organisation, similar to Tanzania’s Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), which has
ruled that country since 1961.
Yet as far as political organisation and transition is concerned, CCM has
consistently got it right from Julius Nyerere, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Benjamin
Mkapa to Jakaya Kikwete and now John Pombe Magufuli! The last one is the
name of CCM’s presidential flag bearer for the coming elections.
The “queue dynamics” in our own NRM has only yielded bitter fallouts! How
could we have got it so wrong? The NRM and it’s predecessor, the FRONASA,
was idealogically borne in Tanzania.
Surely, the NRM owe us an orderly political transition.
