For a unique user on a Web site, unique user information consists of, at least, the IP address associated with their computer and a further ID such as a browser ID. Since more than one person may use a computer, other information, such as a password, may be required to ensure that each a given user is unique user is being counted. Marketers and Web site owners track unique users to determine how many people see their content within a given period of time. The number of unique users that are served specified content is referred to as that content's reach. User information can be gathered openly, through registration, or (with or without the user's knowledge) through the use of cookies. Filtering processes ensure that only humans, rather than bots, are counted. For further analysis, single unique users, who visit a Web site or see specific content only once, are differentiated from repeat unique users, who visit the site or see the content more than once. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: reach http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci214417,00.html cookie http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci211838,00.html bot http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci211699,00.html ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: iMediaConnection.com offers more information in its article, "IAB Issues Measurement Standards." http://imediaconnection.com/content/features/011702.asp The IFABC Web Standards Committee describes its standards. http://www.ifabc.org/web/index.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: MIMAIL WORM SPREADING; LIKELY NOT AN RPC EXPLOIT Experts said the appearance of the mass-mailing Mimail worm Friday afternoon is likely not an exploit of the RPC vulnerability. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci917555,00.html LINUXWORLD: EVANGELIST ADVISES ON PREPARING LINUX PITCH In this interview, Novell Linux Business Office chairman Matt Asay explains how enterprise officers need to prepare before pitching Linux and open-source to decision makers. http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid39_gci917349,00.html PROXIM ENABLES 'LAST MILE' WAN CONNECTIVITY Proxim has introduced a new line of "last mile" wireless WAN products for service providers and enterprises that need building-to-building connectivity without fiber optic cabling. http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid7_gci917546,00.html >> Catch up on all the latest IT news at http://searchtechtarget.techtarget.com/ ______________________ Information Kit | Linux, Unix, and all the little ixes Get up to speed quickly, and be the Linux/Unix Know-IT-All at your office. http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci915803,00.html ______________________ Secret Word-of-the-Day | What is it?
