Dark energy affects the behavior of photons (light particles) as they travel through space. An exact definition of dark energy has eluded scientists. One description is that it is like gravity, but is repulsive (outward-pushing) rather than attractive (inward-pulling), and operates over a much larger scale than conventional gravity. The existence of dark energy is inferred from the apparent acceleration in the universe's expansion, and also from observed irregularities in the cosmic background radiation left over from the Big Bang. The term Big Bang refers to a gigantic explosion that took place approximately 12 billion years ago, in which all the matter and energy in the known universe emanated from a single point or tiny primordial particle. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: energy http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci213564,00.html photon http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci214455,00.html ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Some scientists believe they have found direct evidence for the existence of dark energy. http://www.nature.com/nsu/030721/030721-5.html Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have written an online brochure about modern cosmology. http://snap.lbl.gov/brochure/foreword.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: LINUXWORLD: RED HAT PADS FUND TO FIGHT SCO, FILES COMPLAINT Red Hat kicked LinuxWorld off with a bang when it announced it has filed a complaint in federal court against SCO Group for its "unfair and deceptive" actions.
