UHDV (ultra high definition video) is a technology that provides
video image resolution containing 16 times as many pixels as HDTV
(high definition television). People who have seen UHDV in operation
have commented that the image quality is so good that it approaches
the experience of "being there." Some observers even reported vertigo
from observing fast-changing images without the accompanying
sensation of physical motion. UHDV was developed by engineers at the
Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK).

In a UHDV video image, there are 4000 scanned horizontal lines per
frame. This compares with 1000 lines per frame in HDTV images, and
625 lines per frame in conventional analog TV broadcasts. In
experiments conducted by NHK, a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera
has been used to provide the necessary detail in the captured images.
The storage requirements are considerable. For example, 18 minutes of
UHDV programming requires approximately 3.5 terabytes of disk space.
