With SWAN , a wireless LAN can operate as a seamless extension of a wired network. The technology was developed by Cisco Systems. SWAN technology integrates any new wireless LAN into an existing wired network. Thus an existing wired network can be made to easily serve hundreds of users, organizations, corporations, or agencies over a large geographic area. A SWAN is said to be scalable, secure, and reliable. Special features include centralized management, simplified deployment, security policy monitoring, rogue access point detection and location, interference-source detection and location, radio-frequency (RF) scanning and monitoring, enhanced fault monitoring and troubleshooting tools, and fault tolerance. _______________________ RELATED TERMS: local area network http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212495,00.html?track=NL-34 wireless local area network http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci213379,00.html?track=NL-34 radio-frequency http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci214263,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Cisco provides more information about SWAN. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/witc/ao1200ap/prodlit/swawr_ov.pdf ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: SURVEY: SECURITY TOPS NETWORKING PRIORITY LIST SearchNetworking.com's annual Networking Report Card survey finds that security is the top priority of many IT professionals.
