Since the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001, many countries have discussed issuing national identity cards as a way to distinguish terrorists from the law-abiding population. The government of the U.K. has discussed going in the direction of a national identity card that will use one or more biometric techniques such as iris or fingerprint recognition to confirm the identify of a card holder. The controversial plan would include developing a national database of basic personal information. Many fear that a national identify card would compromise an individual's right to privacy and lead to the misuse of governmental power. The U.S. and Canada are among countries where a national identify card has been discussed but, so far, not seriously advocated by the government. A number of so-called Third World countries require their citizens to carry some kind of national identity card. Today, airlines and banks require some sort of identity authentication. Typically, a driver's license, passport, or other card with your name and an embedded photo is sufficient. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: biometric http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci211666,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Canada's MapleLeafWeb.com site provides a summary of where other countries stand on the national identify card. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/features/privacy/id_cards/perspective.html The Sierra Times points out some of the possible technical difficulties of a national identity card. http://www.sierratimes.com/archive/files/dec/06/eddf120601.htm A Wired.com story in 2001points out that "ID Cards Are de Rigeur Worldwide." http://www.wired.com/news/conflict/0,2100,47073,00.html The government of Pakistan requires a national identity card, but it does not include biometric information. http://www.nadra.gov.pk/cnic.html The American Civil Liberties Union has an article, "National ID Cards: 5 Reasons Why They Should Be Rejected." http://archive.aclu.org/issues/privacy/National_ID_Feature.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: SPECIFIC EXCHANGE CONFIGURATION EXPOSES OWA Microsoft has provided details on the specific configuration that opens a security hole in Outlook Web Access. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci939197,00.html?track=NL-34 QUANTUM REORGANIZES, CUTS WORKFORCE Embattled tape vendor Quantum is trying to find its way back to profitability by reorganizing its internal operations and cutting more than 100 jobs. http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid5_gci939188,00.html?track=NL-34 ORACLE DBA TAKES TOP HONORS Database administrator Arup Nanda, director of the Connecticut Oracle Users Group, has been named Oracle DBA of the Year. http://searchoracle.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid41_gci939206,00.html?track=NL-34 >> Catch up on all the latest IT news at http://searchtechtarget.techtarget.com?track=NL-34 ______________________ SECRET WORD-OF-THE-DAY | What is IT?
