The specification uses an open protocol at the Application layer. It is especially popular for control applications. Ethernet/IP typically employs active star network technology. This type of network is easy to set up, operate, maintain, and expand. It allows mixing of 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps products, and is compatible with most Ethernet switches. Ethernet/IP is used with personal computers, mainframes, robots, input/output (I/O) devices and adapters, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and other devices. The specification is supported by the Industrial Ethernet Association(IEA), ControlNet International (CI), and the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA). __________________________ RELATED TERMS: Application layer http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci211579,00.html?track=NL-34 star network http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci870743,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: ODVA provides a download of the Ethernet/IP specification. http://www.ethernet-ip.org/ Allen-Bradley sells Ethernet/IP networks. http://www.ab.com/catalogs/b113/comm/ethernet.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: STEPS TO SUCCESS: KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO WITH OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING IT conferences are not known for controversy, but things change when the topic is offshore outsourcing.
