OK, I see the problem now.

When creating a new notification,  specify a hostname.  WhatsUp Gold
resolves the hostname to an IP immediately upon saving the notification.
Thus,  whenever an alert is generated based upon the notification it is
using the explicit IP and not the hostname originally specified.

I have logged this as a feature request.
