Adrian, I think I found the 'bug'. If you view the Notifications tab of the map you are monitoring, it will show the start time/end time of your selected alert - regardless of the individual alert property associated with the item being monitored. I opened each item and checked the alert settings and found they had been created with the correct times, but the 24 hours radio button was selected.
Although, I'm not sure why I would have created a range of time I didn't want an alert then selected the 24 hour button on several different items.... but I'll fall on the sword. :) So this turns out possibly to be my configuration problem.
