Hi Eric,

I have to agree in some way form or shape to your post, saying somix can
do it is
Not realy a technical answer but more a marketing one. I for one use
MRTG and WUG
But since I have found this combination way to unflexible and limited in
function,
We are going a complete open source route.

We are using a MYSQL DB to store all Host information like ip address
etc, Then we
Use from them same guy who wrote MRTG / TOBI a tool called smokeping and
RRDTool
To store the actual trend data. Now we can do all that what we did with
whatsup
Gold and way more it it is more flexible since we are not limited to a
compiled
Program. There are so many things I would like to have seen for whatsup
but just
have given up on and moved on. One would have been to be able to place
the actul
Whats up data store on a odbc compl. RDB. Same fore the config files,
that would
Allow yu to do way more then you can do with XML import and export.

Our next step is to build a perl script which will walk a list of hosts
and retrive
A certain nbr of values, then match them up against the data in our
MYSQL DB and
Store the nec. Info for mrtg to retrive the snmp values. Once we
tackeled that we
will go for repacing MRTG and use only RRDTool and SNMP:NET to retrive
the snmp values.

So there is way to much stuff you can do if you have the time and
expertise but one
Thing you might will end up is walking away from WINDOWS based system to
do that since
Support for free open source tools is very limited.....

Just my 2 cents

OK, Denika drones- enough noise on this list! Every time there's a
question about MRTG with WUG, there's at least one response from a
Somixite.

This list has been an extremely useful source of information over the
past couple of years, but it's beginning to feel a bit like Somix's
soapbox for hawking their wares...

I know it's a tempting medium, with a perfect demographic, but Somix is
beginning to feel like those annoying X10 emails. What's next, banner
ads on www.ipswitch.com? If one of the non-Somix employed members wants
to post how Denika has solved a problem for them, that's legitimate and
appropriate to this list.

I've pulled an eval of Denika down, and agree it is a nice tool (aside
from the requirement of an Apache install) for automating the setup of
most of the same values that I monitor with MRTG. I may even convince
several clients to purchase it... Maybe this is just my Monday-morning-
pre-coffee rant; I hate to be the grump... anyone else on this list take
exception to the (admittedly light so far) marketing content on this
list?

At least limit it to no more than one plug a month, Ok?

Flames to my personal email accepted- I'll reply (nicely) to all.
