We telnet to port 23 to check to see if smtp is working. With software you
don't see the result codes of a query, but if I telenet there with port 25 I
know the service is answering and I can tell the person that smtp is working
and they need to look at their application.

Here is what smtp shows if I telnet to port 25:

        220 fw.orau.gov ESMTP Wed, 13 Nov 2002 12:48:35 -0500 (EST)

We use this as a quick and dirty test to see if our proxy/acl is working
through our firewall. If the code above comes up then I know the proxy/ACl
and the smtp service is working. If the application is having problems then
they start looking at the application a little more closely.
