There are two explanations of why this behaviour might occur: 1) Device polled and changes to down. The "stopwatch" is then clicked to stop polling. At some later stage the stopwatch is unclicked. When the device comes up then the Down Time and the Up Time will both be accurate... and so will the poll count.
2) More likely in this context (device was offline late at night - unlikely that anyone was manually turning off polling)... By extension from 1) above, if the device properties are configured for polling "not between" times that last from (say) 2255 to 2330 then you would get: poll at 2246 (missed) poll at 2251 (missed) no poll at 2256 no poll at 2301 no poll at 2306 no poll at 2311 no poll at 2316 no poll at 2321 no poll at 2226 poll at 2331 (device up) Thus, down for a long time and yet only missed 2 polls. Yes, the example above does not quite agree with the actual up time of 2333, but that can be explained by "lag" in starting a poll, etc. Mark Symons Ipswitch, Inc Augusta GA -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of James Amann Sent: Monday, February 17, 2003 16:49 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Incorrect Log Entries - Logic Problem? Now this one looks like fun.... This weekend we had a UPS go down for around 45min. Looking at the device detail for the device on the day of the outage, WUG reports Log Extract 20030215 233334 UP up020101.gsu.edu 131.96.130.111 missed 2 20030215 224616 DOWN up020101.gsu.edu 131.96.130.111 Timed Out Notice that the downtime time appears correct, approx 47min...but the log claims the device missed only 2 polls... The map on which this device is located has the following related settings: Poll Frequency = 60 Seconds Default Timeout = 5 Seconds The device itself has the following related settings: Poll Frequency = 5 (checked every n polls) Poll Timeout = 5 Seconds >From this information it is my understanding that the Map is polled once every 60 >seconds. The Poll frequency on the device, will cause the device to be polled every >5 of the map polls or every 5 min. Next I checked the Outage report, this mirrors the timestamps, but again, does not assist in explaining why the log detail reports only 2 missed polls. Device Outages (days:hours:minutes) up020101.gsu.edu Device Downtime 1 47 Has anyone seen similar behavior? Any ideas whats going on here? Thanks.
