Roger, Since no one else has replied, here goes:
1. Too bad you don't have a later version as the mapping tools (and SNMP) have greatly improved in V7 and V8. And I stopped using V6 over 2 years ago, so remembering exact capabilities of V6 is getting very hard (there may still be a few V6 users here in the Forum, but not many!). There is a free evaluation of V8 at the Ipswitch site.... Upgrade via purchasing a Service Agreement is pretty reasonable... If you stick with V6, and build maps, notifications, reports, etc..., they will survive future updates to V7/8 when you get around to it. 2. The PC is a bit underpowered, these days, but it will probably suffice, depending on how many things you ultimately monitor. 3. Install is pretty straight forward, should be no surprises. Upgrade is similar! 4. Firewalls can block ICMP and ports, so be aware you might have to make changes to it (and that it can affect WUG!). 5. Go for it! Yes, you might have to 'fix' (as you say, but I might call it 'add' or 'modify) things as you find them. 6. Think about notifications! Email is convenient, but it travels over the network, which can break down. Pagers (modem & phone line, too) are not part of the network and reasonable cost. Newer cell phones may give you this capability (talk to your provider)! 7. Bugs? Well I'm sure there are some, mostly fixed by having the latest in the V6 line (sorry, don't even remember what level it went to, something like 6.04?). Again, Ipswitch web site may still have patches for V6 and information about what was fixed in each patch. 8. You don't mention what OS will be used. I'd recommend W2K, in general (NT4 is getting on and XP is not what I'd want in a 'server' and 2003 I'm not very familiar with, yet...). 9. Have fun! Experiment! ReadTheFineManual (please!, should be an electronic version in your WUG folder), press F1 (HELP), Use the KB... then ask questions here.... I plan on installing on an IBM Netfinity 3500 (old dual P-II 233 w/512MB RAM), behind a switch, firewall and cable modem. I plan on monitoring remote hardware devices and web/email, etc - monitoring web content, simple pings and SNMP (theoretically over a VPN ). Thanks.
