I've been testing programs that record this sort of data and may have
some suggestions. Since I like to do most of my network monitoring
under Linux (ok, everything BUT WhatsUp for now) all of these
applications are designed for *nix.

Netdisco - well written program with a good web interface that allows
administration from the web. Not very easy to install and doesn't work
well on my network with 233 switches and over 5,000 nodes. I'm still
trying to see if I can get it to run fast enough to work for us. Only
uses SNMP to gather ARP tables and MAC tables causing its slow
performance.

NeDi - Great looking web application that Netdisco was based from
(Author mentions NeDi in some places). NeDi has some great features and
is very quick but doesn't write the data to a SQL server, instead uses
local files that it greps to locate information. NeDi also uses both
Telnet and SNMP to gather data and is a lot quicker than Netdisco. Main
problem with NeDi is that your entire network needs to have the same
SNMP strings and username/passwords for telnet logins.

Tracker - Tracker can be found on Sourceforge and is what I am currently
using to locate IP & MAC addresses on our network. Tracker doesn't have
the best interface but I only use it to add the information to the SQL
database and my own web apps to present the data. Tracker is not used
by many people and doesn't support the new Cisco devices such as a 4506
(my main problem with this program).

Our network only runs Cisco devices including 3500, 4006, 4506, and 6509
models. Personally I have found that NeDi works the best for us but I
would prefer database support and cannot live with multiple login and
SNMP strings on our network.

Hope that wasn't too much information but I've been testing these sort
of apps for the last few months and could add a lot more...

Thanks,

Todd Wiese

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Map Switch MAC Table

I want to know others that use WUG use to map what MAC addresses are
connected to what switch ports and what their IP is. I have found a
number of products out there that will do this. But they all want to do
all of the network monitoring also.

I like WUG for what it does. I really don't want to replace it or add
the
same functionality in a new product just to sit there.

Any input on this will be really appreciated.

Thank You
