We are using both Whatsup and Solar Winds (Engineers Edition). Also using
Big Brother and MRTG on the UNIX side. I think that is a very good spread
for following the "Best of Breed" approach. There is some overlap, but each
product has a strength where the others are not so strong, they are
affordable, and they don't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to install
and support. My experience with the "UBER network management" products has
not been so happy.

Any tool that can talk SNMP can do this, even though it may not be built
into the product (it's not built into WUG). We use Switch Port Mapper,
which is part of a suite of tools from SolarWinds (www.solarwinds.net).
This will also show multiple MACs per port if a hub is connected to the
switch port. If you're looking at a layer 2 switch, you'll also need some
way to map MACs to IPs since the switch doesn't know this information.
SPM
accomplishes this by allowing you to reference a router so that MAC to IP
resolutions can be performed through its ARP table.

Jeff

What software have you found that can do this?

Thanks

Kevin

Jeff,

When you say you want to know others, are you presently doing this? If
so,
I would like to talk.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Map Switch MAC Table

I want to know others that use WUG use to map what MAC addresses are
connected to what switch ports and what their IP is. I have found a
number
of products out there that will do this. But they all want to do all of
the
network monitoring also.

I like WUG for what it does. I really don't want to replace it or add
the
same functionality in a new product just to sit there.

Any input on this will be really appreciated.

Thank You
