Not neccesary. For example, I have to monitor a few pages on a web server that redirects, therefore a "traditional" custom service will not handle it. So, my script grabs the contents of the page and creates an html file on my WUG server every minute. Since the script never misses, if nothing comes back, the html file (content monitor page) is replaced with whatever a browser would display. My custom service points to the page created on my server as if it were actually monitoring that remote server with multiple redirects. That is one way to monitor remote sources without depending on syslog or traps to monitor. If it is a network device, you can script for telnet contents or whatever, and create an html page from that. We are talking about a product that is awesome for the price; less than a thousand bucks that gives you the flexibility, with a few add-ins, that is only limited by your imagination. You can monitor serial devices that do not have NICs, or just about anything that responds to a poll (interrogation), with the proper configuration of What's Up Gold.

I'm with you. Between HTTPS and WMI, I am losing faith in WUG.

OK
So I can schedule the scripts to run. Even Windows gives a program for
thar. Then I have to use syslog or traps to get info in WUG. But that
still doesn't update the up/down state in WUG it only logs it and send out
alerts.
Now I have another monitoring system to keep up to date. I already spend
too much time keeping MRTG upto date. I don't need another one.
Maybe that is the only way to do this with WUG. It just seems that most of
the other's offer a feature to run your own scripts.
I'm already thinking about look into a different system. If IPSwitch
doesn't fix/add this in their next version I might not have a choice to stay
with them.
Does any one have any ideas on a plug-in to do this?
